There are mainly two types of ball valves: the one with one port and the other having four ports. The first type is called a direct port valve and the second type is called a two-way valve. Both types have four port openings in the body, but the first type incorporates a needle valve on one side of the body and a quarter turn valve on the opposite side. In order to regulate the fluid into its proper channel, the quarter turn valve opens and closes by itself and upon contact with any liquid, it transfers the pressure to the opposite side of the valve whereupon the pressure falls and the fluid is released. This process occurs continuously without the need for a manual lift lever.

The second type has four ports and is known as a two-way valve. These also incorporate a needle valve on one side of the body and a quarter turn valve on the other side. But unlike the first kind, it’s capable of opening and closing only half way, thereby providing an adjustable pressure rating. As for the design, these valves are available in a variety of sizes, from small to extremely large.

The third type is known as a full bore ball valve. These play the role of both a sump and a booster. They have the ability to introduce the required fluid when the sump is full and remove it when the sump reaches capacity. Since these types of ball valves are placed inside the casing of the furnace, they are referred to as cast-in ball valves. In addition to this, they are available in both self-contained and full bore versions.

The fourth variety of these valve seats is known as drinking water and beverage pump ball valves. As the name suggests, these types of valve seats allow the free flow of liquid from one position to the other. They do so by permitting the movement of the diaphragm that houses the valve. Typically, the diaphragm will remain parallel to the surface of the drinking water, while the top of the valve seat will be pushed upwards towards the top of the case. This provides a smooth and continuous path for the fluid to travel from the top of the case to the basin at the bottom of the system.

It should be noted that the above mentioned figures are only hypothetical. Actual results will vary depending upon several factors including the fluid pressure, temperature, angle of the sitting area and the design of the system. For example, if the liquid level is very low in the cylinder then the position of the top of the case can be slightly off-center due to gravity. Likewise, if the temperature of the surrounding air is very high then the angle of the sitting area can be off-center due to the loss of momentum caused by the high temperature. The foregoing discussion of the different ball valve sections is intended to provide a general idea of how they work in reality.
