10:32 p.m. ET: It took a few rounds but Isaac Cruz is finding Cabrera’s chin with regularity as we move to the seventh round. “Pitbull” is finding the target with hooks as Cabrera has given up his space. The way this is going, it may not be much longer for Cruz to secure the stoppage.
It seemed early on that Du Plessis was looking to take the fight to the ground. When he couldn’t get Tavares down, he stuck with the standup game to great success. Tavares landed a big shot late in the first, but Du Plessis got off with boxing combos and front kicks in the second round, leaving Tavares’ nose busted and blood pouring down his face. The third round was more of that, though Tavares showed life late with some hard right hands.
After years of build-up, Spence came out aggressively in the opening round, jabbing and attacking Crawford’s body. Crawford, who is known for fighting from both the southpaw and orthodox stances, fought primarily as a southpaw and scored his first knockdown in round two with a powerful right cross that caught Spence off balance and sent him down for the first time in his career.

Crawford is controlling the action by fighting behind his jab, which maintains distance that’s advantageous to him and sets up his power shots. Avanesyan continues to be relentless, though. Crawford will have to hurt him or break him down to slow him down. … Evidently Crawford’s gloves are torn.
On October 26, 2017, Crawford officially vacated his WBO title to move up to the welterweight division. The WBO announced Crawford as the mandatory challenger to their titleholder Jeff Horn. With Horn scheduled to make a voluntary defence in December 2017 against British boxer Gary Corcoran, Crawford would not fight again in 2017. The winner of Horn vs. Cocoran was then ordered to schedule a fight against Crawford within 90 days. Arum stated he had dates in March and April 2018 on hold.
Crawford simply beat Spence to the punch time and again and carved up the Texan with his superior timing, sense of range and tremendous counterpunching ability. Crawford outlanded Spence 185-96 in total punches, including an 87-33 edge in jabs and 98-63 in power punches.
The fight turned, for good, it seemed, in Round 7. Crawford came out intent to dictate the action. Dictate, he did. When Spence trapped him in a corner, after landing a stiff straight left to the face, Crawford responded with a sharp right hook. Spence crumpled to the canvas. When Spence rose, Crawford stalked back toward him, hoping to finish the night early. He threw a series of that same right hook, each with more force than the one before. Didn’t matter. There it came, another right bludgeoning Spence’s cheek, perhaps breaking his orbital bone, like he had done to his two previous opponents (Kell Brook, Yordenis Ugás).
On fight night, in front of 12,107 fans, Spence broke Peterson down mentally and physically eventually forcing Peterson’s trainer Barry Hunter to stop the fight a second into round 8. Peterson was dropped in round 5 from a left hand by Spence. Peterson beat the count and looked unsteady, surviving the round. Peterson took a lot of punishment, but managed to fire back some offence of his own before the round ended. Peterson’s face looked swollen and his eyes were puffy from Spence’s hard shots. Spence also worked the body from the opening bell. After round 6, Peterson knew he was behind on the scorecards and indicated to his trainer, who said he would give him a few more rounds. In the post-fight interviews, Spence said, “I want to thank Lamont. A lot guys turned down the fight, and he took like a real warrior, and I commend him for that. My coach came with a great game plan, and I just followed through with it. Keep my range, keep my composure.” Spence admitted he would need to work on his defence a little. When interviewer Jim Gray asked Hunter about the stoppage, he replied, “It was really hard , but if you know Lamont, you know he was not going to give up. So I had to stop it. At the end of the day this is my son right here. And there’s nothing more valuable than his well being. If it comes to him or winning, I pick him. I care about him.” After the fight, Spence called out unified champion Keith Thurman, referring him to ‘sometime’. At the time of stoppage, all three judges had their scorecards at 70-62 for Spence.
